Hi, I’m Hamide Kocer and I’m running for National Union of Students delegate with Left Action - Free Palestine this year. I’m studying English cultural studies, and I was involved with organising the Curtin Gaza solidarity encampment this year. The National Union of Students has lots of power and resources which can be used to fight for a free Palestine.

Across the country, students are struggling to afford rent and groceries, but meanwhile, the Albanese Labor government is spending billions of dollars on the military.  Our universities are increasingly being used to suit the needs of big business, and so the National Union of Students needs to fight against this.  Our education should not be subordinated to profit.

The National Union of Students represents millions of students around the country, and it should be doing more to mobilise students in active opposition to the Labor government and for social justice.  Students have the power to fight back against injustice - just this year we saw thousands of university students across Australia take part in the Gaza Solidarity Encampments which made an important impact on Australian politics. We want to see the NUS take up these fights and use its institutional power to organise more students in activism like this.

It’s been Left Action - Free Palestine members who have used their positions to fight for social justice issues like Palestine. While Israel continues to wage a brutal genocide, we need more activists that’ll continue this fight.
