Hi I’m Emily Lassam and I’m running for National Union of Students delegate with Left Action - Free Palestine. I study history at Curtin and am a socialist and a Pro-Palestine activist.
The Australian government has for 11 months backed Israel’s brutal genocide of Gaza. The far right - and with them sexism and transphobia - are rising across the globe. Across the country wealth inequality is growing. More and more students are not falling but being pushed below the poverty line. They are being pushed by the rich and the Australian Labor government.
Left Action - Free Palestine wants to fight for the National Union of Students to take up all issues of injustice, oppression and inequality. It was Left Action - Free Palestine members who have for years fought for the National Union of Students to support Palestine and be a fighting force against university management, the rich and the government.
The National Union of Students is the peak body representing 400 student unions and 7 million students, so it has the ability to mobilise students across this country around Palestine, growing inequality and the deterioration of our education. Yet most students don’t even know about the National Union of Students. Left Action - Free Palestine want to change this by pushing the National Union of Students to mobilise students in fighting for their own rights, and for social justice issues like Palestine. Members of Left Action - Free Palestine have activist experience through the Gaza solidarity encampments and the numerous campaigns we have led for abortion rights, trans rights and against education cuts.
