The Curtin Student Guild is concerned by recent reports of a cyber security incident affecting Canvas, the third-party learning management system provider that Curtin is preparing to adopt as its core LMS from 2027.
Curtin has advised the Guild that the impact at Curtin is currently limited to a small group of students and staff, and that there has been no effect on Curtin’s core systems. We have also been advised that the data involved appears to be limited to details such as names and email addresses, with no indication that passwords, financial information, dates of birth or government identifiers have been impacted.
While we acknowledge that the immediate impact appears to be limited, any breach involving student or staff personal information is serious. This is particularly important given Curtin is preparing to move the wider student body onto Canvas in the near future.
The Guild is seeking further information from Curtin on the incident, Curtin’s exposure, and the additional assurance processes being put in place before Canvas is rolled out more broadly.
We are also monitoring the transition to the new LMS and will continue working with Curtin to ensure the change does not negatively impact students.
Students with questions or concerns about the incident can contact Curtin Connect or the DTS Helpdesk on +61 8 9266 9000, selecting option 2, or through SupportU.
Students who would like to make the Guild aware of issues, concerns or questions they would like raised with the University can contact the Vice President Education, Hadiya Naeemi, at educationvp@guild.curtin.edu.au
