Hi, my name is Callum Trew. I’m a medical imaging student and activist. I’m running with Socialist Action to be the Faculty of Health Sciences Representative.
The healthcare system in Australia, and around the world, is falling apart. This is because of capitalism. The Labor government continues to make it’s priorities clear. They have committed Australia to spending over $360 billion on nuclear submarines as part of a deal with the US and the UK. They are installing AI data centres all over this country. They spent over $900 million on detaining refugees in the last year.
Yet, at the same time, our healthcare system is in crisis. The NDIS cuts will see 160,000 disabled people be kicked off benefits and the scheme will be made even stricter to access. A recent report revealed that 50% of Australians avoid healthcare they need due to costs. So as people who need care are becoming more unlikely to receive it, this places further stress on the already crumbling emergency care faculties in place.
What we need in society is a radical and complete break from the status quo. We need to make healthcare free and accessible to all. We need free education. We need a world where people are put before profit. We need socialism. If we want to win, we need a radical fightback.
