Kia orana rava kotou katoatoa, I am Andre Mataiti Tahu, running for Ethnocultural Officer with Socialist Action.
We are living in truly trying times, seeing the rise in anti-migrant racism, the normalisation of far-right ideologies in the media, and the furthering of social divisions. As white nationalism creeps slowly from the shadows, I believe it is imperative to not just celebrate multiculturalism, but to completely oppose threats to migrants and people of colour - that means to be vehemently anti-racist. I believe Socialist Action is the only party which can promise this, you cannot be anti-racist without addressing the capitalist systems that perpetuates racism.
There is a reason why billionaires, like Gina Rhinehart, are so adamant on keeping socialism down, because it stands for all the oppressed in society - immigrants, indigenous people and the entire working class.
I do not believe that it is moral or just for a university to be engaged with weapons manufacturers. To take the work and research of students and sell it to Lockheed Martin and Huntington Ingalls Industries, who have ties to Israel and their genocidal, islamophobic regime, is appalling. This is one of the key crimes that our university is overseeing, and our Guild needs to seriously take this up as a serious social justice issue.
I believe that the Curtin Student Guild needs to have the courage to stand up to the government and the university administration. Socialist politics gives you the basis to do so. That’s why you should vote Socialist in this year’s election.
