Hey, I'm Zoe Stevens. I'm a socialist activist and member of Students for Palestine, and I'm running to be your Postgraduate Student Rep with Socialist Action.
I’m running with Socialist Action because we need a student union that sees itself as a fighting body for students on and off campus. If you’ve done your undergraduate at Curtin you’ve likely noticed the decline in quality of education, this is a symptom of the university being run like a business for profit - Curtin staff are underpaid, overworked and put on unstable, casual contracts by management. University staff conditions are student conditions. Socialist Action thinks the student Guild should be fighting alongside the NTEU, in their campaign for better conditions and wages, mobilising students in support.
We know that society is becoming harsher and shifting further to the right, we are living through a cost of living crisis, a housing crisis, increasing attacks on migrants, and rising sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Our society is becoming further militarised, the Labor government’s AUKUS deal has put nuclear on our shores, and our university is committed to strengthening ties with the Australian Defence industry and weapons companies like BAE Systems, Babcock Engineering and Lockheed Martin that are closely tied to Israel and Trump’s America. We are seeing the insurgent rise of One Nation and Pauline Hanson, alongside the normalisation of blatant racism and anti-migrant rhetoric.
Students deserve more than pithy service provision that does nothing to tackle the root cause of issues students face. Socialist Action members organised the massive student strike against Hanson, have counter-protested the far right, organised protests against the genocide in Gaza, and protested in solidarity with queer people when under attack by the right. Vote Socialist Action for a fighting student guild!
