VUSAK, Rob (SOCIALIST ACTION)

vpe

Hi, my name is Rob Vusak. I’m a History Honours student here at Curtin University and I’m a student activist here on campus. This year I’m running with Socialist Action for Vice President - Education.

I’m running with the Socialists because I’m angry about the rise of the far right, the climate catastrophe and the many innocent lives slaughtered in capitalism’s wars around the world. We desperately need to build a serious socialist force on and off campus that can resist all of capitalism’s horrors. To do so, we need our Student Guild to be a body capable of willing to fight back against the Labor government and university administration.

In my years as a socialist, I’ve helped to organise numerous social justice actions on and off campus. I’ve learnt that to fight for Palestine, for climate justice and against the far right, we need to be serious about the forces we are going against. The government, the mining corporations and Pauline Hanson aren’t going to be defeated by sitting down and asking nicely. We need to build serious movements that are prepared to shake things up.

One of my proudest moments as a socialist was just a few weeks ago, when I helped organise a student walkout of nearly 2,000 university and high school students. It was so inspiring to see hundreds of young radicals defy the right wing media, the government, their own schools and their parents to boldly stand against racism and the far right. I think that the Curtin Student Guild and the National Union of Students should take a lesson out of their book - let’s be bold, defiant and radical.
