Rarely do I sit down, but when I do it’s nearly always to write. In case you don’t know me, my name is Razanne! I’m a passionate Journalism and Public Relations student, studying a Bachelor of Communications and doing a whole lot of things on our brilliant campus.
As Education Director of Students for Refugees, President of the Curtin Palestinian Society and past Exec or Committee Member of multiple clubs including the Curtin Writers Club and the Curtin Muslim Students’ Association, it goes without saying I have had plenty of interactions with my peers on campus.
Now more than ever, students are having it tough. Students from Palestine, Sudan, Congo and Bangladesh amongst many more, have home and family on their minds. Inflation is pushing students to take on multiple jobs with full-time study loads while fearing their HECS will keep piling on, and the cost-of-living and housing crisis is causing anxiety across the board.
Welfare - now more than ever - is extremely important. Welfare encompasses physical and mental health, and that doesn’t look the same for everyone.
Sustainable practices on campus are great with some aspects, but there is still lots of room for improvement. In 2023, the Guild achieved a lot of great things towards this, but with the second year of this Sustainability role in action, the job has started and I am keen to keep it going.
This year, I am running for Vice President - Sustainability & Welfare, a position the Guild introduced in 2023. In this role I will endeavour to:
- Facilitate containers for change, initiated by the 2023 VP - Sustainability & Welfare,
- Encourage individual composting and composting on campus,
- Create a system to deal with food waste on campus,
- Establish portable bidets on campus for students [cleaner for the environment and for humans ;) ],
- Fix Curtin counselling, and make it more accessible for CALD students especially
- Establish an Ethnocultural Collective within the Guild, to better address the needs of CALD communities, by CALD communities,
- Establish a multifaith & meditation room in the library and on the north side of campus, so students don’t need to take a 10 minute walk every time the facility is needed,
- Make the Gmart lolly wall more fitted to dietary requirements such as halal and vegan (lollies are 100% related to welfare!),
- Advocate for multifaith services to be better for students on campus, such as requirements for extensions during holidays
…and more.
As VP - Sustainability & Welfare, I also promise to remain accessible to students and their concerns. Sustainability is our future, and welfare is our present, and both tie hand-in-hand to secure our university and career journeys.
Help me, help us!
