Hello there! My name is Alex Purcher (they/them), I am an Honours student studying my undergraduate degree in Psychology and I am running for Queer Officer and National Union of Students delegate for 2027 with Elevate Your Voice!
I have spent the last eight years (a long time I know!) on campus advocating for queer people and creating queer friendly spaces here at Curtin. I have been on the queer collective this year and helped specifically with the HIV testing on campus campaign and assisting the current Queer Officer organise and run events for the community such as Pride on campus. I also have worked with the Vice President of Activities on Love, Sex and Consent week to spread the love, sex positivity and empower students with knowledge and confidence regarding their sexual health. Over the years I have also worked within clubs, particularly with the Curtin Robotics Club and Curtin Engineers Club, to foster welcoming queer spaces for people to find community outside of explicitly queer spaces. Outside of Curtin I am involved in many queer spaces such as WAAC, M Clinic, and many community groups which range from mutual interests, body positivity and queer health. All of this experience has given me the skills to run events for a wide range of communities and to fight for and uplift voices within communities that are sometimes overlooked.
If I am elected, I aim to make Curtin a more inclusive space, showcasing the already queer friendly spaces on campus, and fostering new connections between other equity representatives as I recognise many students on campus have intersectional identities. To do this I will work alongside clubs and the other equity officers to create inclusive events across campus and promote the events of spaces that already have a significant queer presence. I will also continue the work of the Queer Officers before me in continuing existing campaigns, such as the We All Need to Pee, Stop Deadnaming, and HIV Testing campaigns.
