LASSAM, Emily (SOCIALIST ACTION)

Hey, my name is Emily Lassam. I’m a history student and socialist activist at Curtin. This year I’m running with Socialist Action to be Women’s Officer and to be a delegate for the National Union of Students.

I’m running with Socialist Action because I think we need an activist Guild and national student union – one that fights not only for students’ rights but against the revival of extreme sexism and all the horrors of capitalism. I have spent the last 3 years helping to promote and organise activism and protests for Palestine, both on and off campus. Last year I helped organise a protest against thousands of sexist bigots who were calling for abortion to be banned. More recently I’ve been part of coordinating the awesome student walkouts against Pauline Hanson.

The rise of Pauline Hanson’s far right racist One Nation party is a terrible development. One Nation is a serious threat to women. They want to attack abortion rights, maternity leave and blame victims of domestic violence for their own abuse. We need a movement against One Nation and their Trumpian vision for our future. Our current Student Guild is not up for the challenge.

Socialists across this country are running to be in student unions around Australia to turn our student unions into fighting bodies that can be part of a movement against Hanson. If you hate Hanson and don’t want our Student Union to remain on the sidelines while extreme sexism, racism and fascism become more normalised, then vote Socialist.
