Hi I’m Hamide Kocer, I’m a socialist and a student activist studying English Cultural studies. This year I'm running with Socialist Action to be the Vice President Sustainability and Welfare and as an NUS delegate.
I’m running with Socialist Action because I think there should be more socialists in our Student Guild, and the Guild resources should be used to organise campaigns and protests to actively fight for students’ rights and for social justice.
We are living through significant times. The far-right is growing everywhere. The climate crisis is not a distant problem anymore – thousands of people across the world are dying because of capitalist-made climate change. There is a major cost-of-living crisis, where the government has done almost nothing to alleviate the pressures that students and workers are experiencing. Our universities are becoming more militarised to facilitate mass destruction and wars. In all - capitalism is a horror show and we need action now!
I want to make sure our Student Guild takes a fighting stance against university management; to demand an increase in welfare payments; to demand for Curtin to cut ties to fossil fuel companies such as Woodside, BHP, Rio Tinto and Chevron; to fight against the militarisation of our university; and to take a fighting stance against the normalisation of Pauline Hanson's fascistic politics. If I’m elected, that’s what I want the Guild to be about.
