Hey, my name’s Lana Jansen! I’m a history major and a student activist here at Curtin. I’ll be running for Humanities Rep with Socialist Action this year.
The barbarities of capitalism have nowhere to hide anymore. War, genocide and inequality have become part of the furniture. Australia hasn’t been immune to the global rise of the far-right. One Nation is building a mass racist and sexist party, dragging the political landscape with it. I’m running with Socialist Action because they are willing to build a fight back against this.
Capitalism has created a world where working-class people are ranked by the profit they create for businesses and billionaires. The system constantly attacks the humanities because it produces critical and creative thinkers rather than productive market inputs with immediate return on investment. I don’t want to live in a world where the arts are subordinate to the dull, monotonous tasks that capital demands.
Students have the power to challenge this fate, but we need a student guild with the guts to not just adapt to the system but fight it! The campus should be a political sphere that mobilises students who are angry about the state of the world. We don’t want to “ease” the depravity of capitalism; we want to abolish it.
