Hey, I’m Mikey James. I’m a trans socialist activist at Curtin, studying environmental science, and this year I’m running with Socialist Action for Queer Officer.
The far-right is on the rise, and Australia is no exception. This past year has seen Pauline Hanson and One Nation explode in popularity. Alongside her endless racist barrage about immigrants and indigenous people, Pauline Hanson has made her stance against the existence of trans people clear.. In the face of this rising threat to LGBT+ rights, the guild has a responsibility to fight against this.
If we want to fight for LGBT+ rights, we need to fight against the far-right and capitalism. In addition to playing ongoing leading roles in the pro-Palestine movement, Socialist Action activists have played an important role in spearheading the campaign against Hanson and the far-right. We’ve led protests of hundreds of workers and thousands of students to oppose Hanson across the country.
It is not enough for the Guild to offer passive opposition; I am running with Socialist Action because we need an activist guild that is willing to build a movement to actively fight the far-right. Students have always played an important role in the struggle against oppression. We need a Guild that is willing to look to this history and use its resources to back the struggle against oppression.
