Hey, I’m Sophie Frazer. I'm an English and Cultural Studies student and a socialist activist. I’m running with Socialist Action for Guild Councillor.
I believe the Student Guild can be a body that can fight for real justice against the horrors of capitalism. The far right has exploded in popularity, and every student is affected by this. Racism and sexism are at a high and students are living in poverty while billionaires exist. Our university has ties to weapons companies that are complicit in genocide and imperialist war.
In my time as a socialist, I have been involved in organising last month's national student walkout against Pauline Hanson and Curtin Gaza Solidarity Encampment in 2024. These moments saw hundreds of students come together, put pressure on our university and the right, and gave people a sense of autonomy and hope for the society they live in that is so often lost.
Throughout history, we know that student unions can stop right-wing attacks. However, this won’t happen if the careerism and passivity currently dominant in the leadership of student unions is unchallenged. We need a combative approach to the government and universities that put profit over people.
