Hi! I’m Noor, and I’m running to be your 2027 Vice President Sustainability & Welfare.
I’ve spent the last two years as your Guild Secretary and have been heavily involved in campus life throughout my time at Curtin. I co-founded the Curtin MENA Club, served as its first President and am still part of its Executive today.
During my time as Secretary, one of my biggest priorities has been improving representation within the Guild. I worked to establish the Ethnocultural Officer and Ethnocultural Department, giving ethnocultural students dedicated representation within the Guild. I’m really proud to have seen that go from something we pushed for to an established part of the Guild today.
After two years as Secretary, I’m running for VPSW because I want to take what I’ve learnt in the role and put it towards the everyday issues affecting students.
One of those is the way medical certificates are handled. If you have a legitimate medical certificate, including one from a telehealth appointment, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether Curtin is going to accept it. I want to push for legitimate medical certificates to be accepted and expand access to free telehealth for students.
Cost of living is obviously another huge issue. I want to introduce emergency rent assistance for students who find themselves struggling to cover their housing costs, as well as dedicated hardship grants for international students who are excluded from a lot of the financial support available to domestic students. I also want financial assistance for international and regional students who need to urgently fly home but can’t afford to do so.
There are also plenty of smaller costs that add up. I want free alternative milk at campus cafés, 24/7 access to coffee and hot food on campus, and subsidised car servicing and mechanic services for students who rely on their cars to get to uni, work and placements.
I also want to improve the spaces students have on campus, including better and more appropriate spaces for faith.
And as someone who has stayed involved in clubs throughout my time at Curtin, I know how much they contribute to campus life and how quickly club budgets disappear. I want to increase club grants so clubs have more money to put back into their members, events and communities.
I’ve spent two years as Secretary learning how the Guild works and, more importantly, how to actually get things through it. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to achieve so far, and I’m ready to bring that experience to Sustainability & Welfare.
There’s always more to push for, and I’m ready to be the one to do it!!
