Hi, I’m Alvin Christiano (He/Him), a Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and I’m running for Guild Councillor with Momentum.
I’m running because I believe meaningful change often starts with addressing the everyday issues that students experience. Too often, practical concerns are overlooked or discussed without meaningful follow-through, so I want to focus on identifying these issues, advocate for practical solutions, and ensure students’ concerns are heard.
One example is affordability on campus. Cafe Central’s 2:30–3:00 pm 50% off period and $5 Saver deal provide valuable options for students, and I believe these initiatives should remain. However, outside these periods, a regular meal can cost $14–$16, therefore students should not have to structure their day around a short discount window simply to access an affordable meal. Therefore I would strongly advocate for a $10 everyday menu price cap to help ensure that students have access to an affordable, substantial meal throughout the day.
Assessment deadlines are another area where I believe greater flexibility is needed. Students balance university with employment, health, family responsibilities and the unexpected challenges of everyday life. When circumstances arise, the current process for requesting an extension can add unnecessary stress. I would advocate for a 48-hour Assessment Grace Period, providing students with a reasonable amount of flexibility without requiring them to justify their circumstances first.
These are the practical issues I want to prioritise from day one. I’m not running to make promises that sound good during election week; I’m running to advocate for achievable changes that can make a genuine difference to students’ everyday university experience.
If elected, I will listen, advocate and follow through. I would be grateful for your support.
