Hi, I’m Shahir (He/Him), and I’m running with Momentum for Ethnocultural Officer.
I’m currently studying a Master of International Relations, but I previously studied a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering here at Curtin, so I have been a part of the Curtin community for quite a while.
Having experienced university as both an undergraduate and postgraduate student, as well as alongside both domestic and international students, I’ve seen how differently people can experience campus and the different cultural, religious and practical needs students can have.
I’ve also been very involved in student life as I served as President of the Curtin Mechanical Society and participated in a range of clubs, societies and student communities. Through organising and attending events, connecting with students & student leaders from different backgrounds, I’ve seen how much diversity already exists at Curtin yet also where we can do more to make everyone feel included.
If elected, my priorities will include:
- Making Curtin more culturally and religiously inclusive by advocating for appropriate spaces for prayer, reflection and religious observance across campus, and ensuring different faiths and cultures are considered in Guild facilities, services and events.
- Pushing for halal, vegetarian and culturally appropriate food options across every campus café, giving students more choice regardless of their religious, cultural or dietary needs.
- Celebrating more cultural and religious occasions throughout the year, with the relevant students, clubs and communities helping lead how their cultures and traditions are represented.
- Creating more inclusive events that bring different communities together, giving domestic and international students more opportunities to connect, share their cultures and learn from each other.
Most importantly, I don’t want to assume I already know what every community needs. I want to create simple and accessible ways for students to raise concerns, suggest ideas and tell the Guild directly what would make campus more inclusive for them.
Curtin is an incredibly diverse university and I want our campus and student life to genuinely reflect that diversity.
