Hey Curtin! Tahsin here! I’m a third-year Civil Engineering student at Curtin, and after an incredible year serving as your International Student Committee (ISC) President, I’m really excited to be running again!
Before becoming ISC President last year, I was already involved in the Curtin life & community, including roles as Curtin Student Ambassador, Engineers Australia Ambassador, Curtin Volunteers Program leader, Residential Advisor and Social Sports Coordinator. These experiences gave me the opportunity to meet students from different backgrounds and was a big reason why I wanted to step up and represent international students at Curin.
When I first ran for ISC President, one of my main goals was simple; to be someone international students could actually reach out to when they needed support.
Over the past year, I’ve done my best to do exactly that. One of my proudest moments was our advocacy around the international student visa fee increase. We spoke up, released statements, reached out to relevant stakeholders and kept pushing the issue, resulting in the opportunity to speak to the media about how these changes affected international students. Our advocacy reached the front page!
Beyond that, I regularly represent international students in Guild and University meetings, worked on student welfare issues and stayed active when difficult or sensitive situations affected our international student community.
I am also actively involved in Global Village, Café Connect, O-Day, orientations, career workshops, visa information sessions, networking events and multicultural club engagement.
But honestly, some of the work I value most happened quietly; the many one-on-one conversations with students, listening to their concerns and helping connect them with the right support.
This year has taught me that representation is about being present, approachable and willing to speak up when it matters.
I’m proud of what we’ve started, but there’s still more I want to do. I’d love the opportunity to continue representing our international student community for another year.
If re-elected, I will build on the work I’ve already started and make the ISC even more visible, approachable and useful for international students. I want to continue advocating on visa, accommodation, cost-of-living and student welfare issues, while improving awareness of the support already available. I also want stronger engagement with multicultural clubs, more social sports and recreational activities, networking opportunities, and major international student events like Pasar Malam. Most importantly, I want to keep listening, showing up, and making sure international students have a strong voice at both the Guild and University level.
