Hi, I'm Akshaya Anil Sheeba (She/Her). I am currently a postgraduate research student in Chemical Engineering.
For the past few months, I have had the privilege of serving as Acting President of the Postgraduate Student Committee (PSC). Combined with my experience as a seasonal academic, this role has given me a unique perspective on the challenges postgraduate students face from both sides of the classroom. It has also shown me the real potential of the PSC President to advocate for postgraduates, address the issues affecting their studies and research, and deliver meaningful improvements to their university experience.
I believe one of the biggest gaps we face is between finishing our studies and stepping confidently into the workforce. I want to strengthen industry connections through more collaboration opportunities for postgrads, and push for regular curriculum reviews so our coursework genuinely reflects what Australian industry expects from graduates, not just academic theory.
I also want Curtin to match the standard set by other Australian universities when it comes to financial support, relocation grants and merit-based top-up stipends for research candidates, in addition to existing fee waivers and stipends. Supporting students financially is how we attract and keep the best talent.
Practical support matters as well. Curtinlink stops running too early in the evening, has a long wait time and doesn't operate on weekends, leaving postgrads who are working in labs, studying in libraries or where public transportation is hard to access, without a convenient way to go home. Increasing the number of Curtinlink vehicles as well as the operating times is a straightforward fix that would make a real difference.
Beyond that, I want to keep advocating for proactive wellbeing support, clearer and more consistent postgraduate policies, and stronger community connection across faculties, so no one feels like they're navigating this alone.
