The Curtin Student Guild stands with asylum seekers and refugees who deserve the right to humane treatment. Independent MP Kerryn Phelps’ Medivac Bill would have given doctors the discretion to order the transfer of refugees on Manus Island and Nauru to Australia for urgent medical treatment.

The Guild condemns the Liberals who resisted the bill through fearmongering and racist rhetoric, and also Labor who amended the bill so significantly that it no longer serves its intended purpose.

“We are extremely disappointed that Australia’s politicians continue to support cruel and racist policies that have led to multiple deaths of refugees and the ongoing physical and mental suffering for countless others,” said Finlay Nolan, Curtin Student Guild President.
