Curtin Student Guild has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2019 Savour Awards for Excellence.
The Guild operates a catering service and a range of food outlets across Curtin University’s Bentley campus.
According to Guild President Finlay Nolan, the Guild is competing for an award in the industrial/institutional caterer category.
The Guild previously won in 2015 and was a finalist in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Ms Nolan said that the Guild was one of few student bodies in Australia that continued to operate commercial food outlets on campus.
“Our role is to assist students get the most out of their university experience.
“Providing fresh, convenient and quality food at competitive prices is one of our most important functions,” she said.
In 2018, Curtin students and staff consumed close to 100,000 hot meals, 35,000 sandwiches and rolls, 6000 breakfasts, 100,000 homemade donuts, 46,000 chicken wings, 300,000 pieces of sushi and 800,000 espresso shots.
Earlier this year the Guild’s catering service prepared gourmet food packs for 13,000 people attending 11 graduation ceremonies at Bentley.
According to Curtin Student Guild Food and Beverage Manager Kelli Edwards, each graduation ceremony’s food service took 40 hours of preparation and involved nine chefs.
The Guild uses biodegradable packaging in its outlets having replaced plastic containers with carbon neutral and biodegradable alternatives.
The winners of the Savour awards will be announced on 12 August.
