Students take to Parliament to Stop the Uni Merger: and our pressure is working!
Hundreds of students, staff and community members rallied outside WA Parliament on Wednesday 21 October, sending a clear message to the State Government: Stop the Uni Merger!
With just one week's notice, and in the middle of one of the busiest assessment and exam periods of the year, hundreds of people came together on the steps of Parliament House to stand up for the future of higher education in WA.
And our campaign is already making a difference.
Student pressure is working!
In a major victory for our growing movement, the WA Liberal Party has joined the Greens in opposing the proposed merger of Curtin, UWA and Murdoch.
This didn't happen by accident.
In just one week, students and supporters have sent hundreds of emails to MPs, made phone calls and organised across our campuses.
We're shifting the political debate, and the State Government now faces a much harder path to pushing its merger through Parliament.
This is what happens when students organise. Our collective voices are powerful, and politicians are listening.
But the fight is far from over.
Students are struggling with rising rents, the cost of living and increasing pressure to balance work and study. Instead of addressing these challenges, the Government is pursuing a costly, disruptive merger that threatens student choice, university jobs and the unique identities of our institutions.
We need better universities, not bigger bureaucracies.
We're calling on the State Government to abandon its merger plans, sit down with students and staff, and develop reforms that actually address the challenges facing higher education.
