Femicide is a national issue

General News

The Curtin Student Guild condemns the ongoing epidemic of femicide and gender-based violence across Australia and calls on the Australian Government to take stronger national action.

Each year, dozens of women in Australia are killed through violence, including intimate partner and family violence. Behind every number is a woman whose life has been taken, and families, friends and communities left grieving.

These deaths must not be treated as isolated incidents. Femicide and gender-based violence require sustained national attention, prevention and accountability.

The Curtin Student Guild calls on the Australian Government to recognise femicide as a national issue and establish a Royal Commission into femicide and gender-based violence in Australia.

A Royal Commission should examine the systemic factors contributing to these deaths, gaps in prevention and early intervention, failures across policing and justice systems, access to crisis accommodation and support services, and what governments and institutions must do to better protect women.

Universities also have a responsibility to act. Our Women’s Officer is currently developing a National University Action Plan examining practical measures universities and student organisations can take to prevent gender-based violence and better support students experiencing it.

We cannot continue to mourn women after they are killed without asking what could have been done while they were alive.

Women deserve more than condolences. They deserve protection, prevention and action
