Hi I'm Zoe Stevens, I'm a psychology and human resource management (HRM) student and I am running to be your Health Sciences Faculty Rep with Left Action - Free Palestine.
As a Health Science student, we’re constantly being taught how to make the life of those around us better, ensuring they have the ability to get the most out of their life. Working in the industry as a support worker and hearing about students’ experiences on prac, however, has highlighted the harsh and disgusting reality of having a health industry focused on profits rather than helping people. Health services are becoming increasingly inaccessible, nurses are horrifically undervalued and underpaid, long wait lists for mental health services and meanwhile all of this is made worse by the ongoing cost of living crisis. The amount ‘won’ for our pracs this year is a measly $319/week which amounts to $8 an hour. This is an absolute slap in the face given the amount of work done during placement and the need to keep paying for rent and groceries.
I have been committed to fighting for the betterment of students' lives, but also broader social issues. For the past 11 months I have been part of organising and building Palestine actions on campus through Students for Palestine, which has seen some of the biggest protests on campus in years. I am currently part of the campaign to demand that our university cut ties with weapons companies that are tied to the genocide in Gaza. I believe the student union should be a force to be reckoned with, that fights against injustice faced not only by us as students, but also by our future clients and patients.
Left Action - Free Palestine is full of student activists that have experience fighting for the rights of students and broader social issues that impact us all. We have shown time and time again that we are committed to fighting against the attacks on your rights as students from the university and also against the larger scale attacks by the government.
