Zavier Wileman
Hi! My name is Zavier (they/them), and I am a first-year Social Work Student.
I am so excited to be running for the Position of Queer Officer with Illuminate! In my free time, I play music, write and direct plays, and work as a carer with Autism Camp Australia. I am also proudly queer, trans and autistic.
There are a lot of amazing queer initiatives at Curtin already - such as the important work to stop dead naming students by the Guild Queer Department - that I hope to support and continue if elected as your Queer Officer. I want to help create a university where all students, regardless of their gender and sexuality, feel a sense of belonging and inclusion.
In my high school, I successfully petitioned for the introduction of gender-neutral bathrooms and queer resources in the nurse's office, as well as helped to start and run my high school's first Queer Club. I know from this first hand experience that change is slow, and you will often come up against resistance from people who prefer to maintain the norm. However, I am a resilient, passionate and determined person who you can entrust to fight for your rights as a queer student.
Additionally, I am a peer worker at Transfolk of WA, volunteering in our weekly drop-in space providing support and mentorship to young trans people aged 14-20. I am also a lived experience public speaker with Transfolk of WA, and I have given speeches for the Equal Opportunity Commission, the Mental Health Commission, the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and Mix 94.5. My connections with the trans and gender diverse-community in Perth position me well to advocate for my community as Queer Officer.
I hope that you will consider voting for me as your Queer Officer, and if you see me around campus feel free to come and say help!
