Tegan Morrison

accessibility

Hey, I’m Tegan Morrison, she/they. I’m a transfem student diagnosed with ADHD studying a master’s of Human Rights and I’m an activist. I used to work administration for youth mental health, and I have been volunteering in the mental health and disability sector for 6+ years. I am running for accessibility officer with Left Action - Free Palestine!

History has proven that student politics can be a blossoming environment for political action to thrive and grow. The anti-Vietnam movement in the 60s and 70s, saw student unions playing key roles in fighting against the war among also fighting for other issues like women’s rights, indigenous rights and gay rights. Our current decade sees similar issues with the Labor government and our universities continuing to profit from the ongoing genocide in Palestine, women’s and queer rights going backwardsand our Labor government still funding our racist police and institutions like Banksia hill and Unit 18, resulting in the death of Cleveland Dodd.

Left Action played a key role in Curtin’s student encampment for Palestine earlier this year, organising the big protests and working tirelessly to get students more involved. We continue to organise actions such as protests and are planning a future student general meeting through Students for Palestine. We commit to continue to demand that Curtin cut's ties to weapons companies, and reject the deal that the current Guild came to with the University that gave the Uni a progressive gloss.

Just recently the Labor government has passed a bill that will make the already extremely restrictive NDIS funding even more restrictive. This comes during the continued cost of living crisis that is affecting all students, but especially those living with a disability. This bill has been criticised by a vast majority of disability advocates, activists and workers. Through my years of advocacy in mental health I have learnt a lesson that you cannot work with these institutions that continue to profit off the restrictions of the NDIS, especially with the Labor government.

This is why Left Action believes that the Guild and the National Union of Students should be not just independent of Labor but committed to fighting against them, not working with/for them.
