Razanne Al-Abdeli

Hi there! My name is Razanne Al-Abdeli (She/Her) and I am currently a Bachelor of Communications student, studying Journalism and Public Relations. Prior to that, I was studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), and while I greatly respect our allied health sector, being exposed to the health science field really opened up my eyes to a lot at uni, which also led me to doing everything I was passionate about extracurricularly including where I am at today.

Representation really is everything, and for the past few years a lot of my work has been dedicated towards creating more accepting and intercultural spaces. While diversity is important, understanding and breaking misconceptions are even more so and that starts with facilitating conversations.

In 2020, I founded the Curtin Palestinian Society with two other brilliant Palestinian students, where as President I focused on teaching our peers about our rich and ancient identity beyond the reductive and harmful media misrepresentations.

As a Muslim student that has been at the Curtin Muslim Students’ Association since 2020, being able to break down misinformation regarding my identity has also been incredibly liberating. Seeing students wholly claim their Muslim identity over the past years has been incredibly joyous, and is one of the amazing things about the campus we study at.

I believe university should be where learning does not stop at the classroom door. It is about ensuring all students feel not only safe, but supported. University is about encouraging and facilitating dialogue, especially the conversations that may not always be heard. We should graduate with more than just a degree in our hand, but with an experience that leaves us feeling supported- something we carry into each stage in our lives. And that starts with what happens today. University must be supportive, and that starts with us—students.

I have seen a lot at this university. While it is beautiful, vibrant, encouraging and has high potential, there are definitely things that together we can and need to improve.

For this reason, I ask that you support me, support Illuminate, to support our student experience together, as I run for Guild Council in 2024.
