Lorien Watts

accessibility

Hey folks! My name is Lorien Watts (they/he), and I am an Environmental Science Honours student. I am super excited to announce that I am running for the role of Accessibility Officer.

I have spent the past two years as a member of the Accessibility Collective, and I am now stepping up to take on the role of the Accessibility Officer to continue the fantastic work that previous officers have done in this space.

I am a multiply disabled and neurodivergent student, with first-hand experience of many of the access barriers facing disabled and neurodivergent students around campus.

Some areas I want to help bring improvements to are:

  • Increasing the physical accessibility of classrooms and campus, especially in light of the construction for building 316
  • Better access to and awareness of currently existing support services and materials
  • The introduction of a disability and neurodiversity awareness program for lecturers and tutors Improved options for food on campus for those of us with dietary restrictions.

I also want to keep building a sense of community and support among those of us with access needs on campus. For example, I have started running Creative Connections, a weekly drop-in social/craft group for any students that identify with having accessibility needs. If I am elected as Accessibility Officer, I would love to keep running Creative Connections, as well as create new events both online and in person.

Thank you for considering me for Accessibility Officer and I can’t wait to help make campus a more inclusive and accessible place!
