KOCER, Hamide (Left Action - Free Palestine)

Hi, I’m Hamide Kocer. I’m running as the National Union of Student delegate and I’m a socialist activist here at Curtin studying English Cultural Studies and History. The National Union of Students represents millions of students around the country, and should be doing more to mobilise students in active opposition to the Labor government and for social justice. Students have the power to fight back against injustices. We want to see the NUS and Curtin Guild take up these fights, use its institutional power to organise more student activism.

We need more people prepared to fight like hell against bigotry, injustice and inequality all around the world starting from the Curtin student Guild. Because the system we live under is a broken one — and if things are going to get any better, we’re going to need defiant radical activism that demands not only for better conditions to all students, but also demands a better world — one where the rich minority don’t get to own and control all the wealth in society. That’s why I’m a socialist.

I’ve been a socialist for a few years now and am proud to have actively participated in the recent mass movement against Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians. Some of the highlights include actions here at Curtin University, particularly participating in the Gaza solidarity encampment and helping to organise two mass student general meetings for Palestine that swept the country this year and last year.

Protests and ongoing campaigns like these don’t happen magically, they take serious effort, energy and determination from left wing activists for them to actually happen. Which matters a lot in a world where ordinary people’s rights are being stripped away, it means instead of watching it happen we build radiant movements that can win. Which requires mass defiant campaigns that are oppositional to the university management, who will always have counterposed interests to students.

The Curtin Student Guild has innumerable resources that can mobilise students, it should be leading the charge for students against the injustices of the world. I want to use my position to make this possible.
