Hello! My name is Jasmyne Tweed, I’m a Law and Commerce student, and I’m running for the position of NUS delegate in 2024 with Illuminate!
Throughout 2024, I’ve had the immense pleasure of serving as your Guild President. We’ve had massive wins for students, like completely free events that are bigger and better than ever. The team has successfully fought for the introduction of paid placements and the University has now committed to the installation of free period product vending machines.I firmly believe that the Student Guild will only be safe and strong in the hands of Dylan Storer next year.
During my term, in holding with Illuminate’s values, I have also maintained a strong relationship between the Curtin Student Guild and the National Union of Students (NUS). The National Union has always had a big part to play in advocating for students across the country and taking hard stances against decisions that would seek to worsen the student experience.
The Former Government oversaw University fee increases, restrictions on access to the HECS/HELP scheme, and around $770 million in funding cuts to universities. For a sector already at crisis point, these changes have been catastrophic.
I believe it’s important for student unions to have a united front in the National Union of Students, while being able to read the unique needs of their own campuses. If elected, I will represent Curtin students on the national stage and advocate for policy that will cater to our campus’ needs. I will take strong stances in support of solidarity with university staff, pushing for action on the genocide in Palestine, supporting disadvantaged students from diverse and minority backgrounds, and opposing the corporatisation of universities.
