JAMES, Mikey (Left Action - Free Palestine)

queer

Hey, I’m Mikey James, I am an Environmental Science student and trans socialist activist here at Curtin. This year I’m running with Left Action - Free Palestine for Queer Officer.

We think that the Curtin Student Guild needs to take on a more activist orientation to fighting the problems of today. Left Action - Free Palestine activists have a long history of fighting for social justice issues, particularly for the rights of queer people.

Our strategy of mobilisation and resistance is exactly how Left Action - Free Palestine activists chased away far-right bigots who tried to destroy Drag Queen Story Time at Maylands Library. It’s how we rallied thousands of trans rights supporters onto the streets in multiple cities to stand up to notorious transphobe Posie Parker and resisted the vile horde of white supremacists who crawled out to defend her events. This coordinated organising with our comrades across the country is why that bigot Parker was forced to cancel the rest of her Aus/NZ tour and flee the continent in disgrace.

But the fight is far from over. With Trump’s return to power, trans rights are under attack more than ever, and right-wing fearmongering is on the rise globally. Puberty blockers and HRT for transgender youths are now banned in Queensland. Which is why it was important for activists involved in Left Action - Free Palestine to organise the Anti-Trump National Day of Action earlier this year, a nation-wide action that united left-wing groups to stand up against Trump’s far-right agenda, to demand that the Australian government end the US alliance.

The Curtin Student Guild needs to be an active participant in these struggles. Myself and others in Left Action - Free Palestine have fought on campus and on the streets for a better world and the Guild has all the resources to take those struggles forward, whether that’s for Queer rights, our education or for Palestine.
