Hello beautiful people!
I am Huzaifa Nawaz (he/him), a Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Accounting, and I am super excited to be running for International Students Committee President! From the moment I stepped foot on Curtin’s campus as a wide-eyed international student, exploring the campus with a suitcase full of dreams, to now running for the ISC President- it's been one wild, wonderful ride.
As an international student, I've faced the challenges we all encounter: homesickness, cultural adaptation, and balancing academic, social, and work commitments. These experiences have fuelled my passion for creating positive change and making Curtin more than just a place to earn a degree. It's about overcoming our challenges and turning them into opportunities for growth and connections.
My journey from a bewildered newcomer to becoming the President of the Bangladeshi Students Association at Curtin has given me invaluable insights and life-changing experiences. I've had the privilege of leading a vibrant community, organising events that students love, events that bring joy, create bonds and foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity. I have tirelessly worked to create spaces where students can connect, unwind, and feel at home. I believe every student deserves to have their voice heard and concerns addressed.
Effective representation is crucial, and I am committed to being your voice to ensure that our unique needs, perspectives, and hardships are heard and acted upon by the university and the wider community at Curtin. I truly appreciate our university's efforts to provide resources to enrich student experiences. However, there's always room for improvement, and I'm committed to working on those areas that need attention.
As your potential ISC President, I'm dedicated to implementing solutions that address student’s fundamental needs:
Firstly, I suggest we take a more personalised approach by ensuring proper communication and representation from each international student community. Through practical approach and representation, we can understand every student's unique needs and challenges, ensuring no voice goes unheard.
Secondly, I'm passionate about making our events more inclusive and welcoming to students from all backgrounds. We'll actively involve diverse students in event planning and execution, ensuring everyone feels genuinely included.
Furthermore, I advocate regular platforms for dialogue on diversity and inclusivity where students can voice their ideas on making our campus more welcoming.
One particular area that I also want to emphasise is bridging the gap between students and the university. Illuminate believes in protecting and building a strong student assist service in the Guild that provides unique support to students struggling to adapt to an unfamiliar education system, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Lastly, arranging regular workshops and sessions focused on migration, academic support, and personal/professional development is super important for me as your ISC President candidate.
With your support, we can make Curtin a place where every student feels valued, supported and empowered. For this reason, I ask for your support for me and Illuminate, as we are devoted to helping you get the most out of your university experience.
