Hiba Alsoeady

Hi all,

Please take a moment and join me in acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which you are standing today.

If we haven’t previously met, hi, my name is Hiba Alsoeady [she\her], and I’m currently working as an Electorate Officer for a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia while studying Law and Science at Curtin University.

This year I’m really excited to be running for Faculty of Health Sciences Representative, Guild Councillor and NUS Delegate.

I must confess, this is my first time running for a Guild position. In saying that, I have held a multitude of leadership roles on various committees/boards within the not-for-profit sector, political party and union in the last two or so years.

In those years, I have had the privilege of experiencing being the;
1. President of a local branch,
2. Vice President of newly established Multicultural Organisation,
3. Secretary and Treasurer of the Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre, and a
4. Council member for the Young Women’s Council of Australia.

During that time, I gained many skills that now help me make informative decisions and run effective political campaigns. Most importantly, I've learnt to never accept ‘NO’ as an answer.

As a culturally and linguistically diverse female living in Australia, I am very passionate in providing a voice for those like me and making it easier for them to step up, lead and pursue their goals when challenged by strict traditional perspectives. I am also a strong advocate for worker rights. Specifically, educating students on their rights in the work field. I know especially within Health sciences, many students have had bad or unfair experiences while on placements and I want to advocate for better protections for these students and make sure they know their rights.

If elected, I will strongly advocate for Guild representation on the University Council and opportunities for students to meet and speak with unions from their prospective industries.

If you are a Curtin University student, I would love your support to help me do that.
