Chloe Jackson

Hi, I’m Chloe Jackson and I am running for the position of ‘Vice President - Sustainability and Welfare’ with Left Action. I am in my final year of a Bachelor of Arts in History and will continue my studies with a Master of Secondary Teaching next year.

As a history major, I feel compelled to acknowledge the historical precedent set by student guilds, as driving forces for great change. While they do function as a governing body for the day-to-day concerns of the university, a student guild has the potential to voice the concerns of students on a national stage. From leading protest movements against the Vietnam war to fighting for marriage equality, radical student guilds have shown time and time again the power of student mobilisation.

Climate change is a fear looming over our heads with irreversible, life-threatening effects at our doorstep. This means that the Curtin Student Guild needs to be an activist Student Guild, now more than ever. In the position of VP - Sustainability and Welfare I will not be limited to greenwashed policies of individual, on campus environmental action. I will go above and beyond to criticise and fight against the University’s ties to some of the nation’s largest fossil fuel companies; BHP Billiton, Woodside, Rio Tinto and more. Left Action directly oppose the Vice Chancellor, and will fight the university establishment, not collaborate with them.

Only Left Action holds the university accountable for its contribution to the climate crisis. Curtin Students deserve a radical, activist student guild.
