Sofia Gonzalez Torres (Illuminate)

My name is Sofia Gonzalez Torres and I use she/her pronouns. I am a second year Master of Nursing Practice student and I am running for the position of President of the International Students Committee for Illuminate in 2022.

I am a very motivated and passionate person. As an overseas nurse, I have dedicated my life to helping others, through volunteering in different countries by assisting and advocating for vulnerable communities. I had the privilege of creating non-profit organisations that provided free nursing care to people with low income. We provided free access to physical and recreational activities for children in unfavourable conditions, as well as educational support, vocational guidance and mental health assistance to many students with limited resources. I also participated in student committees to improve educational reforms in Chile for the equity and accessibility of education.

Since my first year at Curtin University, I have been actively participating by co-funding the Curtin Latin American Club as a Vice-President. Today I am part of Illuminate, where I believe we can create significant changes for a better student experience, where students are truly listened to and supported.
As an international student I am ready to work hard for my international peers. I believe that I have the experience and motivation to represent you. Students deserve a high quality of education, and to live in a world with gender equality rights and an eco-friendly environment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has left international students in disadvantaged conditions. Students are facing a lack of economic support and academic assistance, and are facing critical mental health issues. I am hoping to improve academic support to international and offshore students, and to provide essential information regarding international fees and living expenses. Borders remain closed, and we are not able to spend time with our families. Thus, I am committed to improving counselling services for international students, those who are in need of mental health support.

I promise to listen to your voice and provide support for a better student experience.
