Guild Delivers: Curtin’s proposed initiatives to ease parking fine pressure
In response to mounting concerns over parking issues on campus, Curtin University is set to launch an expanded and ongoing "Food for Fines" program, alongside a volunteering initiative aimed at alleviating the pressure of parking fines. These initiatives come after your student representatives successfully advocated for change, with nearly 8,000 signatures from dissatisfied students and staff.
Food For Fines
The University intends to expand the “Food for Fines” initiative to be ongoing and to support the Curtin Community locally through the pantry.
Volunteering
The University intends to explore volunteering for similar waiving of a fine as another option. This might include volunteering at events on campus.
While these initiatives signal a willingness to address concerns, Curtin's fundamental stance on parking remains unchanged as below:
- The University believes that parking is fit for purpose.
- The CellOPark app has no reported outages, and the University does not have the appetite to create a new app/implement new features.
- 20%-30% of fines are forgiven. The cost of fines is not being reduced.
- A low-cost permit option for high-contact students does not align with the University’s parking strategy and may confer that there is availability when there is not.
More information will be provided as the initiatives are finalised.
