Curtin Student Guild stands in solidarity with staff taking industrial action

General News

The Curtin Student Guild stands in full solidarity the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Curtin Branch and its members who will undertake protected industrial action, including a half-day strike from 12pm on Wednesday 5 November.

The Guild recognises that the decision by staff to take industrial action is not made lightly. It follows unaddressed concerns about excessive workloads, insecure employment and falling real wages that have undermined both staff wellbeing and the quality of education provided to students.

The Fair Work Commission recently found that staff workloads at Curtin are directly impacting the quality of student learning and feedback. This finding reinforces what students and staff have long known: fair working conditions are essential to high-quality education and a strong campus community

Curtin’s staff underpin every lecture, tutorial and piece of feedback that students receive. The Guild believes that ensuring staff have secure, fair and respectful working conditions is critical to maintaining the standards of teaching and learning that students expect and deserve.

We call for Curtin University senior management to engage constructively with staff and work towards a fair agreement that supports both employees and students.

While strikes and stoppages are never ideal, the Guild recognises them as an important and lawful way for workers to demand better conditions. We encourage staff to participate in union-led actions and stand together in the pursuit of fair treatment.

Staff and students deserve a university that values people as much as progress, and the Guild will continue to stand in solidarity with those fighting for that vision.
