FEE REFUNDS AND REMISSIONS
In certain circumstances, if you have withdrawn from your studies after the census date, or have not completed the unit requirements, you can apply to:
- have your HELP debt remitted or re-credited;
- have your upfront payments refunded or retained for future study.
PERSONAL STATEMENTS
Refunds and Remission applications must meet three criteria set by the Australian Government. To be considered, your application must demonstrate that your circumstances:
- Were beyond your control
- Did not make their full impact known until on or after the census date
- Affected you to the extent that you were unable to complete the requirements of the unit.
If you are applying for Refunds and Remissions for more than one semester, you will need to lodge separate applications and write separate letters for each semester.
If you were able to pass other units in the same study period you will also need to explain why they were not affected (or not affected as badly).
Student Assist have produced a sample letter which might help you when writing a Refund and Remission personal statement.
SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION
Refunds and Remission applications must be supported by documentary evidence. If you are seeking supporting documentation from a medical or health professional, they will need to complete a Curtin University Professional Practitioner Certificate, which you can download here.
There are specific criteria your supporting documentation must demonstrate for it to be considered as part of your application. Student Assist have produced a guide to completing a Professional Practitioner Certificate which you may wish to give your treating professional. Getting the form right the first time will save you having to ask your treating professional to revise it.
You can find out about other supporting documentation options on our website here.
