AVOIDING SCAMS
Every day, scammers are coming up with more ingenious ways of stealing your money or your personal information. It can only take a moment of inattention for you to fall victim to a scam. It could cost you money, or your entire identity. When you know what to look for, it can be easier to avoid being scammed. Here are some things to watch out for:
Frequent Examples of Scams

	- Gift Cards

		- Banks, phone companies, credit providers, or government agencies such as the Australian Tax Office will never ask you to make payments to them using gift cards.

- Fortune Tellers

		- If someone offers to tell your future, it may be a scam. They may ask for seemingly harmless details that enable them to gather enough information to hack into your accounts.

- Emails – Bogus Subscriptions or Scheduled Parcel Deliveries

		- Most email providers have become good at filtering spam and scam emails before they reach your inbox. Sometimes they still sneak through – look out for unexpected attachments or emails asking you to make payment for services you don’t subscribe to.

- Fake Bank Messages

		- Scammers can make their messages appear to have come from your bank. If a message from your bank is asking you to follow a link or call a number to input your details, beware. Don’t click on the links in the message. Find the official contact details for the bank and call them yourself.

- PayID

		- The only people who you should use PayID for are people you know.

- Phone Calls

		- If you receive a call from a number you don’t know, often with a voice speaking a language other than English, it could be a scam. And don’t fall for a common tactic: the Australian Tax Office cannot issue arrest warrants for unpaid taxes.

- Websites and Online Shopping

		- Get-rich-quick schemes advertised online are usually too good to be true. Similarly, if the price on a product seems too good to be true, it probably is. Search the internet for reviews of the online store you’re looking at if you’re unsure.

- Contract Cheating and Blackmail/Extortion

		- If you pay for a service to do your assessment for you, they may ask you for more money and threaten to tell the University if you don’t pay. This is called blackmail and extortion, which is a far worse crime than you cheating on an assessment. If this happens to you, do not pay. Come and see Student Assist and we can help put a stop to it.
