SAFETY
The Guild and Curtin aim to provide a safe and secure environment for all members of our community.
REPORT A SEXUAL ASSUALT OR SEXUAL HARASSMENT INCIDENT
If you are aware of, or have experienced an incident of sexual assault or harassment, see something that shouldn’t be happening, or feel unsafe, please report it.
The Safer Community Team can be reached directly on +61 8 9266 4444, or through Curtin's online form. You can make an anonymous report if you choose. All reports are treated seriously and confidentially.
Curtin’s Safer Community Team provides a range of services to keep you safe on campus, including:
- 24/7 safety presence and availability
- Security escort services
- Support for assessment extension application
Find out more about these services.
What can I report to Curtin?
- Threats of suicide or self-harm
- Threats of physical violence towards others
- Any alleged criminal acts including: all forms of assault (including emotional, physical and sexual assault), domestic violence, stalking
- Sexual harassment
- Mental Health concerns, which have an effect on students and/or staff of the university community
- Students who have been reported as missing by Curtin employees or family members
What happens after I make a report?
The Safer Community Team will address immediate safety concerns and offer ongoing support and assistance as needed.
In applicable situations, the Safer Community Team will advise the person involved of their options in terms of formally reporting the incident. If this is something a student chooses to do, they can provide assistance and support through that process (this includes reporting to the police, the Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC) and/or other external services).
Once you’ve made a report of sexual assault or sexual harassment, the Safer Community Team will follow a process to ensure you get the assistance you need. You will be in control the whole time, and can opt in or out of any step. More information here.
The Safer Community Team can also support you in obtaining assessment extensions. You do not need to complete an extension application, they can do this on your behalf without disclosing the details. Reach out to them directly and let them know which units and assessments you require support with.
We understand that all of this can be overwhelming. If you are unsure of your options, speak to the Guild’s independent and confidential, Student Assist officer. This includes your options to submitting an anonymous report with the support of a Student Assist Officer as well as understanding the types of outcomes that can be achieved by reporting to the University.
