LEGAL RESOURCES

While the Guild's Student Assist service does not offer legal advice, we can help you access appropriate services.


 

NEW CURTIN SERVICE FOR 2025

Starting Wednesday April 2nd 2025 the John Curtin Law Clinic will be hosting a Drop-In Legal Clinic every Wednesday in Room 407.216.

This service is open to students, staff, and the wider community, providing pro-bono and confidential legal advice from law students under the supervision of experienced legal practitioners.

If you have a legal issue or simply need some guidance, you can drop in and have a chat — no appointment necessary.

COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICES

There are a range of community legal centres in Perth that often offer a very economical, if not free, service to low income earners. If you would like to know where to access suitable legal advice, please speak to a Student Assist officer who will point you in the right direction.

Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc.) (ALSWA)

The Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc.) (ALSWA) provides legal representation and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Western Australia, including advocating in policy and law reform in submissions, at conferences and in the media.

Citizens Advice Bureau

Citizens Advice Bureau provide a low-cost legal advice service on a wide range of issues and prepare various simple legal documents. Legal Appointments are available at the Perth head office and branches throughout Perth metropolitan area and the South West.

Community Legal Centres

Community Legal Centres (CLCs) are not for profit, non-government organisations that provide legal and welfare services to people in need. Some CLCs specialise in certain areas such as the legal problems of youth, tenants, migrants and Centrelink benefit recipients. Others offer more general services within their local communities. The services provided by CLCs may include legal information, advice and representation to individuals and groups; community education and law reform programs and advice to governments on policy issues. Most services are free or very low cost.

Consumer Credit Legal Service (WA)(CCLSWA)

Consumer Credit Legal Service (WA) Inc. (CCLSWA) is a not-for-profit charitable organisation which provides legal advice and representation to consumers in WA in the areas of credit, banking and finance. CCLSWA also takes an active role in community legal education, law reform and policy issues affecting consumers.
 

The organisation is funded by the Commonwealth and Western Australian governments through the Community Legal Services Program to provide free legal advice to the Western Australian public, including those residing in rural and remote regions.

Circle Green Community Legal (for Employment, Tenancy, and Migration Advice)

Circle Green Community Legal is a merger of three community legal centres - the Employment Law Centre of WA, Tenancy WA, and the Humanitarian Group. They provide specialist legal services in employment, workplace discrimination, residential tenancy law, family and domestic violence, and humanitarian services.

International Students Only: My Legal Mate

To help international students understand their legal rights, StudyPerth will provide FREE multilingual and confidential legal advisory services via My Legal Mate.

My Legal Mate provides answers to commonly asked questions about laws in Australia, as well as on-the-go legal information about any legal matter related to:

  • Employment and workplace rights
  • Private disputes and sexual assault
  • Education provider disputes
  • Housing/tenancy issues

How it works

Through My Legal Mate, you can take part in brief interactive quizzes to better define your legal problem through a series of Yes/No answers.

This creates personalised pathways that walk you through legal and non-legal remedies, along with links to helpful resources.

Law Access

Law Access is a not-for-profit organisation that coordinates the giving of pro bono (free) legal assistance by the Western Australian legal profession.

The service is targeted at not-for-profits and individuals in genuine need of legal assistance who satisfy a means and merits test. We are the last resort for those who cannot get legal assistance from community legal centres or legal aid.

We do not provide any face to face advice or accept applications in person.
Applications must be submitted through the online forms on the website or by posting or emailing a hard copy application form.

Please be aware we do not provide any general advice over the phone or by email.

Southern Communities Advocacy Legal Education Service (SCALES)

SCALES provides free legal advice, information and representation to low income people living in the Kwinana and Rockingham areas. SCALES also provides a state wide service in the area of immigration. SCALES deals with clients predominantly in the following areas: criminal law; domestic violence; family law; public housing and tenancy; immigration and refugee law; Centrelink; criminal injuries compensation, equal opportunity claims, consumer, contract, debt and civil law.

Welfare Rights & Advocacy Service

Welfare Rights & Advocacy Service (WA) is a not for profit community legal centre that provides independent advice, information, referral, representation and advocacy in relation to Centrelink, Family Assistance, Tenancy and Social Security prosecution matters.
The service is based in Perth and provides its services in a geographic catchment area within the state of Western Australia. There is no charge for our services.

Women’s Law Centre

The Women's Law Centre is a community legal centre funded to provide free legal services for women of Western Australia. Providing information about legal issues and referral to support services, legal advice, casework, community legal education and law reform advocacy.
By appointment, the Women's Law Centre can assist you with:

  • Family law children's issues

  • Divorce applications

  • Family law property settlement one off advice at our monthly evening legal clinic (by appointment only)

  • Domestic and family violence issues (including restraining orders)

  • Protection and care proceedings

  • Criminal injuries compensation where it relates to family and domestic violence and/or sexual assault

  • Women's human rights issues through systemic advocacy

  • Advice Line is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4.45pm.  We are closed from 12.00pm to 1.00pm daily for lunch.
