STAYING SAFE WHEN JOB SEARCHING
As data breaches, scams, and fraud become more common, it's important to stay secure online by being aware of these dangers and following key safety tips.
KEY SAFETY TIPS
Search using a reliable source
The platform where a job is posted can indicate its trustworthiness. Be cautious if you only see a job advertised on social media and ask yourself why it isn't listed on regular job search sites like Seek.
This is particularly true for jobs that seem too good to be true. For example, someone posting on Instagram about a “work-from-home data entry role that pays $3000 a week” or asking you to “leave product reviews for hundreds of dollars in gift cards” is very likely dishonest.
Verify email addresses and links
Be cautious when communicating with recruiters or potential employers online. Pay attention to the email address and any links they send.
Poor grammar or unusual formatting in an email address is a red flag. For example, there’s a significant difference between ‘@guild.curtin.edu.au’ and ‘@guildcurtin.au.edu’.
If you're unsure about a link or email, call the company's public number and ask to be connected to the person who contacted you to verify everything independently. This ensures the authenticity of both the email address and the link.
Don’t include private information on your resume
Avoid including unnecessary private information in job applications. People often share sensitive details that could be harmful if misused.
Any sensitive information needed for the job can be requested later in the hiring process. Since you can't be sure how a company stores data, don't take the risk. If you're uncertain, check what constitutes personal information on the Australian Government website.
We suggest that only your first and last name, phone number and email address is necessary. Age, DOB, address and middle names is too much information to be putting on your CV.
Ask questions
Remember that it's your right to ask questions of the recruiter or hiring company, whether you have concerns or just want to be thorough. A legitimate company should be able to explain why they need information and how they protect it.

Buying and selling cars
There are fake sellers that advertise vehicles they do not own and fake buyers that offer to arrange a bank transfer plus transport of the vehicle. This also includes odometre tampering and cars that still have bank loans on them. Unless you are buying from an authorised dealer you need to do your due diligence.
There are many simple things you can do to stay safe when buying or selling a car. For more information check out CarSales.com.au
Comprehensive car insurance policy
We understand that insurance is expensive and it is tempting to choose only the Compulsory CTP insurance to save money. However, if you have invested in a vehicle it is recommended that you also invest in comprehensive insurance. To learn more about insurance visit the Money Smart Website.
