ASSESSMENT EXTENSIONS
If you are experiencing circumstances beyond your control and are unable to submit your assessments on time, you have the option to submit an application requesting an assessment extension.
If you are seeking an assessment extension as a result of sexual assault or sexual harassment, you are not required to complete the Assessment Extension Application. Please contact the Safer Community Team for support. You can contact them by email at safercommunityteam@curtin.edu.au or by phone on +61 8 9266 4444.
Applications must be submitted before your assessment due date and time. Applications may be accepted up to 5 working days after the assessment due date and time if you can provide evidence to explain the delay e.g. emergency or severe illness.
APPLICATION CRITERIA
Unless you are self-certifying, you must be able to provide supporting documentation proving circumstances beyond your control, which may include:
- Student injury, illness or medical condition
- Family issues (family injury, illness, or bereavement)
- Participation in Defence Force or Emergency Services
- Unavoidable and unexpected work commitments not opted into on a voluntary basis
- Elite Athlete sporting activity participation
- Obligatory Religious Requirements
- Further reasons including social and welfare
If you are submitting any supporting documents, ensure that the date is not after it's due.
If you have a Curtin Access Plan (CAP), the considerations are different. Please click here for more information.
If you are using your smartphone to scan the document, make sure that it is legible. It may be clear on your mobile but not when it's viewed on a desktop.
Follow the steps below to apply for an assessment extension or deferred exam:
- Access the online Assessment Extension form on the Student administration forms webpage.
- Read the assessment extension information presented to you.
- Continue through the steps to enter the relevant unit details and upload your supporting documentation.
SELF-CERTIFICATION
In some circumstances students are permitted to self-certify to support Assessment Extension requests. This means you do not have to provide supporting documentation for the request.
Eligibility rules:
- Students studying 50 credits or less in a study period have 1 self-certification opportunity per study period.
- Students studying more than 50 credits in a study period have 2 self-certification opportunities per study period.
- Self-certification cannot be used for exams, group work, presentations, or practical assessments
- Self-certification cannot be used twice for the same task
- All opportunities expire at the end of the study period – they don’t roll over into subsequent study periods
There are three possible outcomes of a self-certified Assessment Extension request:
Auto-approved: Get an instant extension for most submissions—no questions asked.
Approval needed: Submit a request; it’ll be reviewed and either approved or denied.
Not allowed: You may have attempted to self-certify for an assessment that it can’t be used for.
Self-certification extensions cover up to 5 days – it doesn’t matter if you need 1 day, or 5.
APPLICATION PROCESS
