For years, the Guild has conducted research, worked with other student and youth organisations and polled the Curtin community on the issues that are affecting students and young people. We know that there is a growing feeling of anxiety as youth unemployment and poverty rates increase, sexual assault and harassment persists in the university community, accessing education is increasingly difficult and costly, and we are left uncertain about our futures and the future of this planet due to inaction on climate change - that is why we decided to focus on these issues in the lead up to the 2019 Federal Election. Many students are struggling - that is not a personal opinion, it is a fact.
Through our We Will Not Be Left Behind campaign, Guild Representatives called and spoke in person to hundreds of Curtin students about the election and what it could mean for them. We helped build the School Strike 4 Climate movement. We gave students the opportunity to grill our local Senate candidates through our Candidate Forum. We raised awareness about wage theft and other issues faced by the workers of Australia. We helped to put the issues affecting students and young people on the agenda.
However, our campaign is not only about this election. It is about showing students and young people that they deserve to be heard and that they can effect change. The Curtin Student Guild has been working to address these issues for many years - regardless of whether or not there was an election that year, and regardless of who was in Government - and we will continue to do so now that this election is over. We hope you’ll join us in working towards a fairer, safer, more equitable Australia.
We will not be left behind.
