A food aid program set up by Curtin University’s student union has received a funding boost from Lotterywest.
According to Curtin Student Guild President, Hana Arai, the food aid program has been a life line for international students; one of the groups hardest hit by COVID-19.
“Many international students cannot return home even if they want to,” she said.
“They are separated from loved ones, have lost their jobs and are coping with the challenges of making ends meet while they complete their studies in these uncertain times.”
Ms Arai said that in 2019 the Curtin Student Guild received less than 30 requests for food aid but this year as a result of COVID that number had increased to 100 requests a week.
“Many people require ongoing assistance,” said Ms Arai.
According to most recent data from Curtin University there are close to 4000 international students on shore in WA mostly from India, China and Malaysia
