Curtin Writers Club presents Spotlight on Australia, in collaboration with PEN Perth, Grok Magazine, Curtin Student Guild International Student Committee and Curtin International Relations Society.
Spotlight on Australia is part of PEN Perth's Spotlight series, which focuses on the contemporary plight of writers, artists and journalists in countries experiencing hardship and how that might affect responsible freedom of expression, media censorship and political interference.
This event will include Curtin students reading their own writing or work by Australian writers with themes of Australian identity, politics, freedom of speech and freedom of information, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous Australian writers and writing, Australian writers of colour and immigrant & refugee narratives, followed by a discussion of these themes.
Suggested Australian writers include Behrouz Boochani, Alexis Wright, Kim Scott, Jack Davis, David Williamson, Cassie Lynch, Yirga Gelaw Woldeyes, Robert Wood, Priya Chidambaranathan, Elizabeth Tan, Rafeif Ismail, Claire G. Coleman, Ambelin Kwaymullina, Yassmin Abdel-Magied, Melissa Lucashenko, Benjamin Law, Sally Morgan, Bruce Pascoe, Ellen van Neerven, Alice Pung, Rebecca Lim, Gabrielle Wang, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Tom Cho, Shaun Tan, Omar Sakr, Randa Abdel-Fattah, Carly Findlay, Stan Grant, Anh Do and Anita Heiss.
